Key points
  • An affordability calculator lets a shopper see what they can afford on a specific vehicle, starting from the monthly payment and down payment they have in mind.

  • The Know Your Buying Power tool opens as a slide out on the vehicle, so the shopper never leaves the unit they were looking at.

  • Shoppers enter payment, down payment, credit, term, trade-in status, and contact information, then see estimated value, monthly payment, loan length, APR, and down payment.

  • By the time a shopper reaches the results, your store knows their target payment, cash down, credit range, term, and whether there is a trade involved.

  • Mike says the tool is free when you sign up for MOTO(acquire), and it is included with MOTO(convert).

Most shoppers don't walk onto your lot thinking about sticker price. They think about a monthly payment, and they want to know if a specific unit fits before they ever call the store. So what is an affordability calculator for car dealer websites? It's a tool that lets a shopper plug in their own numbers on a vehicle and see what they can actually afford, without waiting on a salesperson to run it.

Mike Crothers, CEO of MOTO(acquire), put it bluntly in this video: "I can't believe this tool right here is free when you sign up for MOTO(acquire)." The tool is called Know Your Buying Power, and here is how it works on a dealer website.

What is an affordability calculator for car dealer websites?

An affordability calculator answers the question every shopper has on a vehicle detail page: can I swing this? Instead of guessing from a sticker price, the shopper starts with what they are comfortable paying each month and what they can put down, then sees how that lines up with the vehicle in front of them.

The Know Your Buying Power tool does this on a specific vehicle. When a customer clicks it, a slide out opens right there on the page, so they never leave the unit they were looking at.

How shoppers estimate car affordability with Know Your Buying Power

Mike walked through the flow in the video. It's short, and every step is something the shopper already knows about themselves.

  1. Monthly payment. The shopper picks the payment they'd be comfortable with. In Mike's example, $700.

  2. Down payment. They enter what they'd put down. Mike used $3,000.

  3. Credit score. They select what their credit is like.

  4. Term. They choose the loan length they want.

  5. Trade-in. The tool asks if they have a trade-in.

  6. Contact information. They fill out their information.

Once that's done, the tool shows the shopper the vehicle's estimated value, their monthly payment, loan length, APR, and down payment. In Mike's words, "with this tool, customers now figure out what their buying power is on any specific unit in your inventory."

Why this matters to your store

Think about what that shopper has told you by the time they hit the results screen. You know the payment they're targeting, the cash they have, roughly where their credit sits, the term they want, and whether there's a trade involved. That's the start of a deal conversation, not a cold lead with just a name and an email.

It also works for the shopper. They get real numbers on the exact unit they're looking at, on their own time. When they do call or come in, they already have a sense of whether the vehicle fits, and your team isn't starting from zero.

For a used car manager, that trade-in question matters too. Every shopper who says yes is a potential acquisition, which is the whole reason MOTO(acquire) exists.

What dealers should look for in a buying power tool

  • It runs on a specific vehicle, not as a generic calculator buried on a finance page.

  • It starts from payment and down payment, the way shoppers actually think.

  • It asks about a trade-in so you can spot acquisition opportunities.

  • It returns a clear breakdown: estimated value, payment, term, APR, and down payment.

Where Know Your Buying Power fits in MOTO(convert)

The buying power tool is included with MOTO(convert), the MOTO(acquire) website trade tool. MOTO(convert) gives shoppers instant valuations, lets them request a firm offer, and tracks their vehicle's value monthly. The buying power tool sits alongside that, so a shopper can figure out affordability on a unit and get into the trade conversation from the same site.
