MOTO(acquire) Best Month Ever: Why We're Growing and How Many Repair Orders a Dealer Can Buy

Seven dealer demos on a Friday and a record month. Mike Crothers explains what dealers are hearing in their 20 groups and why they want in before November.

MCMike Crothers, CEO of MOTO(acquire)
Key points
  • Dealers who swap their website script to the MOTO(acquire) trade-in tool are getting more trade opportunities and closing more deals from the traffic they already have.

  • Stores that started MOTO(drive) a couple months ago are consistently buying 1% of their repair orders every month.

  • Those service drive results come without a huge team, new processes, big spending, or heavy training.

  • Word of these results spreads fast through 20 groups, which is why dealers are booking demos at month end.

  • MOTO(drive) takes a couple weeks to get rolling, so dealers who want results in November are starting now.

Every used car manager wants more cars without more ad spend or more headcount. The question I keep hearing from dealers right now is simple: how many repair orders can a dealer buy out of the service drive in a month, and what does it take to get there? That question is a big part of why MOTO(acquire) is having its best month ever.

Here is where I am today. It is Friday, the day before the last day of the month, and I have seven demos scheduled with dealers and dealer groups. I have been in automotive software for about 13 years, and that has never happened to me on a Friday. In between those meetings, I am trying to close the handful of deals that need to get done before month end.

Why are dealers booking demos at the end of the month?

Normally a GM or used car manager is not putting a software demo on the calendar during the last days of the month. They are working deals. So when dealers book anyway, I think it comes down to one thing: the success our other dealers are having, and how fast that word spreads in this industry.

You hear about it at a 20 group. Another dealer tells you what they are buying out of service, or how many more trade leads their website is producing, and you want to know how. That is what is filling my calendar. We have so much inbound interest that we are shuffling things around to fit dealers in. I am not complaining. That is a great problem to have.

Getting more from the website traffic you already have

The first piece is the website. Dealers are changing the script on their website to our trade-in tool and getting more opportunities from the traffic they already have. They are not buying more traffic. They are converting more of the shoppers who already show up, and closing more deals from them.

How many repair orders can a dealer buy each month?

This is the part I think is even cooler. Dealers who turned on our service drive acquisition tool a couple months ago are consistently buying 1% of their repair orders on a monthly basis.

What matters to a dealer is how they are doing it. They are not building a huge team. They are not changing their processes, spending a bunch of money, or running a bunch of training. MOTO(drive) stores consistently buy about 1% of their repair orders without dedicated service acquisition hires.

If you have tried service drive acquisition before, you know why that matters. Most programs fall apart because they depend on someone walking the drive every day, and that person gets pulled onto the sales floor or leaves. When the work runs off your data instead of a dedicated buyer, the results hold month after month. Where MOTO(drive) fits, and why timing matters

MOTO(drive) handles service drive acquisition using your DMS data and automated texts. It pushes VIN and miles to your inventory tools, and your sales team is alerted when a customer is ready. MOTO(acquire) integrates with all major DMS platforms and many others, including Tekion, Dealertrack, CDK, Reynolds, and Auto/Mate. If your DMS is not one we already connect to, we will build the integration.

Part of the rush right now is timing. It takes a couple weeks to get MOTO(drive) rolling, and dealers want it working in November. So they are reaching out now to get started.

The other pieces work alongside it:

  • MOTO(convert) is the website trade tool with instant valuations, firm offer requests, and monthly value tracking.

  • MOTO(retain) sends past sales and service customers their vehicle's value every month. Those value tracking emails have a 36% open rate and 99.5% deliverability.

If you want more trade opportunities from your website, want to buy more cars out of service, and want to send value tracking emails to all your past customers, reach out. We will find time for you, show you the tool, and start working on getting you set up so you can start rocking in November.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How many repair orders can a dealer realistically buy each month?

MOTO(drive) stores consistently buy about 1% of their repair orders every month. Mike notes that dealers who started a couple months ago are hitting that consistently. Results depend on your store, but that is the benchmark MOTO(drive) dealers are seeing.

Do I need to hire a dedicated service buyer to buy cars from service customers?

No. MOTO(drive) stores buy about 1% of their repair orders without dedicated service acquisition hires. The tool uses your DMS data and automated texts, and alerts your sales team when a customer is ready, so you do not need a huge team or new processes.

How long does it take to get MOTO(drive) running?

Mike says it takes a couple weeks to get MOTO(drive) rolling. That is why dealers who want results in a given month reach out a few weeks ahead to start setup.

Does MOTO(drive) work with my DMS?

MOTO(acquire) integrates with all major DMS platforms and many others, including Tekion, Dealertrack, CDK, Reynolds, and Auto/Mate. If your DMS is not one we already connect to, we will build the integration.

Will a new trade-in tool on my dealer website require more traffic?

No. Dealers are changing the script on their website to the MOTO(acquire) trade-in tool and getting more opportunities from the traffic they already have. MOTO(convert) adds instant valuations, firm offer requests, and monthly value tracking to your existing site.

Today's Friday. It's the last day of the month. Well, tomorrow is, and MOTO(acquire) is having our best month ever. And today's actually going to be pretty crazy. I have seven demos scheduled with different dealers and dealer groups on a Friday, which has never happened to me before, and I've been in automotive software for about 13 years now.

So hopefully in between those meetings, I can close the handful of deals that are hanging out to get done before the end of the month here. So when I think about why dealers would book on my calendar before the end of the month, when normally they wouldn't do that, I think it comes down to the success that our other dealers are having, and that word spreads fast in this industry.

Dealers are just changing the script on their website to our trade-in tool and getting more opportunities and closing more deals from the traffic they already have. But what's even cooler is they're turning on our service drive acquisition tool, and dealers who started this a couple months ago are consistently buying 1% of their repair orders on a monthly basis without having a huge team to do it, or without changing their processes, spending a bunch of money, doing a bunch of training.

And so these success stories start to permeate through the industry. You hear about it at a 20 group, and we have so much inbound interest that we're shuffling my calendar around to fit dealers onto it. I'm not complaining. That's a really great problem to have. It's also partially because it takes a couple weeks to get MOTO(drive) rolling, and so dealers are looking to get this going in November, so they're reaching out to start it now. So if you're a dealer who wants to get more trading opportunities from your website, and you want to buy more cars out of service, and you want to send value tracking emails to all your past customers, then reach out to us. We'll find time for you and show you the tool and then start working on getting you set up so you can start rocking in November.
