Free Leads from Social Media: Can They Replace Paid Third-Party Leads for Dealerships?
What happens when a store stacks its free social media and DM leads against the money it spends on paid third-party leads? The comparison is worth a look.
Before leaning into social media, the store averaged 560 leads a month in 2025 and spent about $25,000 on paid third-party sources to get them.
With the month not even over, 270 leads came in through MOTO(acquire) and another 240 came through the speaker's personal DMs.
Those social leads cost nothing in cash, and together they rival the volume that $25,000 in paid leads produced.
Social leads can only be compared against paid sources if you track which person and which post produced each lead.
Every month, a used car department writes a check to third-party lead providers and hopes the volume justifies it. Sooner or later the question lands in the GM's office: can social media replace paid third-party leads for dealerships, or is it just noise? In this video, a store puts real numbers side by side, and the gap is hard to ignore.
What the numbers in the video show
Start with the baseline. Before the store leaned into social media, it averaged 560 leads a month in 2025. Those leads came from paid third-party sources, and the store was spending about $25,000 to get them.
Then came social. With the month not even over, 270 leads had come in through MOTO(acquire). The speaker's personal DMs added another 240. Put together, those free leads come close to, or beat, what $25,000 in paid spend was producing.
The line that sums it up: "All of this cost me zero."
Can social media replace paid third-party leads for dealerships?
For this store, social media is already producing lead volume in the same range as its paid sources, and the month had not closed yet. That is the point worth sitting with. The leads you pay for and the leads your team can earn on its own are not as far apart as a lot of stores assume.
That does not mean you cancel every provider tomorrow. It means the paid budget is no longer the only way to fill the pipeline, and you should know exactly what your social channel produces before you renew the next contract.
Why the cost difference matters
A paid lead has a price attached the moment it lands. A lead from a salesperson's post or a DM has no invoice. The investment is time: people posting inventory, answering messages, and following up the way they would on any other lead.
If social delivers a real share of the volume that $25,000 buys, every lead from that channel lowers your cost per sale. Even if social only supplements your paid leads, the math moves in your favor.
What it takes to make social leads work
People who post consistently. The DM numbers in this video came from personal activity. Social works when the people selling cars are the ones showing up in the feed.
Fast responses to DMs. A DM is a lead. Treat it with the same urgency as a form from your website or a call to the showroom.
Tracking. If you cannot tell which posts and which people produced leads, you cannot compare social against paid sources, and you cannot reward the people doing the work.
Tracking is where social selling usually breaks down. Leads come in through personal profiles, get handled in text threads, and never show up as a source in the CRM. When that happens, the channel looks smaller than it is, and the paid sources keep getting the credit.
How MOTO(social) fits
MOTO(social) gives each person posting on social their own link, with leads attributed in the CRM. Social leads show up alongside your other sources, tied to the person who generated them.
That lets you run the same comparison this store ran: what you pay for versus what your team brings in on its own. Once you can see it in the CRM, the conversation about your lead budget gets a lot more grounded.

Frequently asked questions
Can social media really replace paid third-party leads?
In this video, a store's social and DM leads for a partial month came close to the volume its paid sources produced, at no cash cost. Whether it fully replaces paid leads depends on how consistently your team posts and responds. A practical approach is to keep paid sources running while you measure what social actually produces.
Are social media leads actually free for a dealership?
There is no invoice per lead, which is why the speaker says it cost him zero. The real investment is time: salespeople posting, answering DMs, and following up. That time is worth managing like any other lead source.
How do I know which salesperson's posts are generating leads?
You need attribution at the individual level. MOTO(social) gives each person posting on social their own link, with leads attributed in the CRM. That way social leads show up as a real source instead of getting lost in text threads.
Should salespeople use their personal social accounts?
In the video, the speaker's personal DMs alone produced 240 leads in a partial month. People tend to respond to the person selling the car, not just the store's brand page. The key is making sure those personal-account leads still get tracked and worked in your CRM.
Does MOTO(acquire) integrate with my DMS?
MOTO(acquire) integrates with all major DMS platforms and many others, including Tekion, Dealertrack, CDK, Reynolds, and Auto/Mate. If your DMS is not one we integrate with yet, we will build the integration.

All of this cost me zero. Just so you guys can grasp an aspect of it: this store, prior to me doing social media and my leads, used to generate 560 leads a month on average in 2025. MOTO(acquire) alone has brought in so far for the month, and the month's not over, 270. My personal DMs is another 240.
Now I'm going to go ahead and add all of this. All those leads are almost more than the $25,000 that I'm investing in generating those leads through KBB, through Carfax, through any of these lead sources. 25 grand to get 560 leads. All of this cost me zero.
